LIHU‘E — Dylan Balaan peeled off a nine-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the West Junior Pee Wee a 19-13 edge over the East in the annual Shrine Game hosted by the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football Association, Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
Proceeds from the series of games will benefit the Kaua‘i Shrine Club.
The JPW win for the West was its only victory as the East shut out the West, 12-0 in the Mitey Mite opener and the East took a 19-0 win out of the stadium in the Junior Midget finale.
Kainalu Rapozo chalked up two touchdowns to lead the East Junior Midgets in the finale, the first coming in the opening frame when the player donning the top of the Lihu‘e Patriots carved out an 84-yard touchdown. Rapozo put the cap on the win in the final period, running 29 yards to paydirt.
Kalena Harder, garbed in Kapa‘a Eagles’ green, scored his touchdown, a seven-yard run, in the second quarter, Leslee Aki, also in Kapa‘a green, gracing that score on a pass to Isaya Valeria for the point-after.
Leading up to Balaan’s score in the final quarter, the JPW teams marked two touchdowns in the first frame and two touchdowns in the third quarter.
Kaikela Aquino peeled off runs of four and six yards for the West score, the four-yarder coming in the first quarter for an early 6-0 lead which was answered by Bryceson Abigania on a 35-yard breakout and Blake Probasco doing the point-after for the 7-6 East bulge at the half.
Jasper Jacinto peeled off a 65-yard kickoff for touchdown to open the second half, but Aquino pulled the West back into the game with his six-yard score, Lacin Montemayor completing a point-after pass to Cody Artaho for the 13-13 stalemate which was broken by Balaan.
Shazen Brede and Tryten Pongasi-Adric put the East in the winner’s column for the Mitey Mite matchup, Brede opening the books in the second period on a 47-yard touchdown and Pongasi-Adric putting the game out of reach in the final frame with a five-yard run.
Sherri Agosto, president of the KPWFL, said the Shriner’s game was the final weekend of games for the three divisions. The Mokihana Bowl, scheduled for Dec. 3 at Vidinha Stadium will feature the Kapa‘a Eagles Junior Midgets, the league’s division champions, hosting the Makaha Ali‘i from O‘ahu.
