LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Warriors continued to bring home the accolades following the team’s best season in 22 years.
The Warriors, who won their first KIF title since 1989 earlier this month, placed 13 players on the 2011 KIF All-Star team. In addition to those 13 players, John Das was named offensive player of the year, Kaulana Kaui the defensive player of the year and head coach Keli‘i Morgado was named coach of the year after his fourth season with the Warriors.
“It’s a pretty special feeling to be a part of this team and this season,” Morgado said. “It was a wild ride of a season and I’m very, very proud of them for their accomplishments.”
The Waimea Menehune, who finished the regular season tied with the Warriors, placed seven players on the all-star roster while the Kaua‘i Red Raiders had six players named to the team.
The Menehune placed most of their all-stars on the defensive team. The ball-hawking duo of Keoni Ana and Alika Emayo took up two of the four defensive back spots. Emayo, a two-way player like most of the Menehune, was also named quarterback of the year.
Kaua‘i’s Caitlyn Rapozo was named kicker of the year. Rapozo was the most consistent kicker in the league this year, and her talent was best highlighted by a 42-yard kick that sailed over the crossbar with plenty of room to spare early in the season.
Kapa‘a’s Vance Kamibayashi, Austin Pagtolingan and Blaz Gusman were three of the five named offensive lineman. Those three helped pave the way for Kapa‘a running back Syndrek D’Sio, who took home league honors as top-running back.
