Jessilyn Artaho-Aki, a Kapa‘a graduate, made the Max Ziel All-Tournament team in the 2011 Max Ziel Basketball Tournament played at Oswego State University in New York, Saturday.
“I went to New York to watch her play her first game against Hilbert,” Vonda Aki, Jessi’s mom, said in an email following her appearance at the Kapa‘a High School gym where she watched her husband, Willy Aki, coach the Warrior wahine against the Kapolei Hurricanes, Thursday. “Wells took the game against Hilbert and I was also able to watch them play in the Max Ziel Tournament in Oswego. The Wells Express didn’t fare too well, but Jessi’s hard work during the tournament earned her one of the five spots on the All-Tournament team.”
Artaho-Aki, playing for the Wells College women’s basketball team, led her squad with 19 points to earn the spot on the Max Ziel All-Tournament team, averaging 14.5 points per game during the two-day tournament, states a Wells College release.
Despite her strong 19-point showing, the Wells College Express dropped 84-58 to D’Youville College in the consolation game of the tournament.
The loss drops the Express to 1-2 on the year while D’Youville improves to 1-2 in the season.
Joining Aki at the firing line, Kristen Ryan of Syracuse, N.Y., also finished with 14 points and a game-high 17 boards, adding four assists while Kelli Furney of Camden, N.Y., added 10 points and six rebounds.
Kaitlyn Roland led the D’Youville Spartans with a game-high 31 points and Hannah Norton added 20 points and 14 boards.
Wells College opened the match, firing the first two points, but the Spartans answered on a 13-0 run, opening up an 11-point lead. The Express came back on a 6-0 run to crawl back to within five points, 13-8, but D’Youville ignited another run near the half for the 48-25 lead, fueled by Roland netting 21 of her 31 game-total marks in the first half.
The Express, posting 28 percent shooting in the contest and 21-of 28 free throws, came back to outscore the Spartans, 36-33, in the second half, but could not overcome the first-half deficit, the Spartans finishing with 45 percent shooting from the floor.
Wells College next hosts Utica College on Nov. 29 on a 7 p.m. (EST) tipoff.
