LIHU‘E — Justin Franklin found the net with just seconds remaining in the game to force an overtime for the Northshore in the title game of the Under 14 Boys division at the Will Veeck Inter-regional soccer tournament at the North Vidinha fields.
Trevor Freudig, netting two goals for the Westside Scrubs, found the net early to give the Westside boys a 1-0 halftime lead.
That lead stood through most of the second half before Franklin, under heavy pressure from Freudig and Andrew Beeksma in the middle, finally got a hole with seconds left on the clock.
That late goal fired up the boys in orange who picked up its offense during the overtime. Freudig won a ball in his own territory and motored it to the empty rightside for the game-winner.
Members of the winning team, coached by Tony Garma and Len Nitta, include Beeksma, Keane Caberto, Conor Doi, Isaiah Duldulao, Freudig, Andrew Herr, Nygel Melchor, Adam Ort, Jarran Takekuma, Kamuela Thain, Ryan Valhuerdi, Tryren Kaneshige and Haku Barriga.
Nygeria Williams and Alexis Yadao netted a goal apiece in the second half to send the Wailua Wolverines into a shootout against Kalaloa in the Under 12 Girls match being played on the adjacent field, Friday.
But goalkeeper Cambrina Ort made some great saves to give Kalaloa, a team from the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 940 made up of girls from the Kalaheo and Koloa area, its 4-3 edge in shootout.
“We were down 3-1 so I moved the girls to offense thinking we could pick up at least a point,” said Aaron Handy, coach of the Wolverine pinkshirts. “And now, we’re into a shootout.”
Cambrina Ort, making some great saves as goalkeeper during the shootout, picked up Kalaloa’s first goal in regulation play but the Wolverines answered with a goal from Vanessa Rubel for the 1-1 halftime stalemate.
Bianca Colagreco and Jessica Turley came up with early second-half goals before the Wolverines moved its forces to offense.
“Today was truly a miracle,” said Tinina Olores, the Kalaloa team mom. “Our girls worked so hard and I am a very proud team mama. They had an amazing season and they are such sweet girls.”
