Arthur DeFries Jr.
Arthur K. DeFries Jr. of Anahola died Sept. 27, 2011, at The Queen’s Medical Center at age 69. He was born on Jan. 31, 1942.
He was preceded is death by his wife, Martha DeFries; parents, Arthur and Tamar DeFries Sr.; and brother, Gaylord DeFries.
He is survived by his son, Peter (Heather) Strickland; one grandchild; three sisters, Tamar “Kamala” Mersberg, Annaline Spencer and Edie DeFries; two brothers, David (Sandy) DeFries and Roland (Kari) DeFries; numerous step-children, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 22, at Waioli Hui‘ia Church in Hanalei; services will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m.

Hilda De Silva
Hilda De Silva of Kapa‘a died Oct. 15, 2011, at Samuel Mahelona Hospital at age 93. She was born on May 25, 1918, in Hawai‘i.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Medeiros; husband, Manuel De Silva Sr.; daughter, Janet Jim and her son, Russel De Silva.
She is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Albert “Herbert”) Louis; three sons, Dennis (Carolyn) De Silva, Wayne (Rita) De Silva and Macky (Sheila) De Silva; brother, Michael Medeiros; and sister, Violet Tate; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Oct. 21, at St. Catherine’s Church from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.; Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Catherine’s Church Cemetery.
Amelia “Emily” Mendoca of Port Allen, Kaua‘i died Oct. 4, 2011, at Kaua‘i Care Center in Waimea at age 101. Born Dec. 19, 1909, in Kilauea, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Mendoca; son, Richard Mendoca; brothers, Manuel and Domingo Aguiar; sisters, Theresa Clement and Mary Cambra.
She is survived by Josephine Banner of Texas; Diana (Steven) Duarte; Alica (Joquin) Fejarang; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, Oct. 28, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo. Visitation is at 9 a.m. and Mass to follow at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary, Koloa.
Vicki Jennell Montgomery of ‘Ele‘ele died Oct. 11, 2011, at age 54. She was born in California on April 24, 1957.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Yazmine Montgomery; brothers, Michael and Reed Johnson.
She is survived by her daughter, Maya Montgomery; ex-husband, Arvin Montgomery; sister, Sunny Goodman; step-mother, Fran Soiland; and brother, Robert Johnson.
A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 23, at Wailua Beach (mouth of river) beginning at 11 a.m.
Casual attire suggested.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
