More than 100 family and friends from Kaua‘i attended the Hula ‘Oni E Festival from Sept. 2 to 4 to support 18 dancers of Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani, according to a press release.
The dancers were awarded third place in both the Kahiko and Auana categories, and were led under the direction of Kumu Hula Kapu Kinimaka Alquiza.
Halau Ka La ‘Onohi Mai O Ha‘eha‘e, Kumu Hula Tracie and Keawe Lopes placed first and Halau Na Mamo‘o Pu‘uanahulu and Kumu Hula Sonny Ching placed second in the Kahiko category, according to the release.
Halau Na Mamo‘o Pu‘uanahulu and Kumu Hula Sonny Ching placed first and Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka, Kumu Hula Napua Makua and Kahulu Maluo-Huber placed second in the Auana category.
This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Hula ‘Oni E Festival. Festival Directors, Na Kumu Hula Larry and Hokulani DeRego, were honored with a proclamation from Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, naming the week of Aug. 29 to Sept. 4 as “Hula ‘Oni E Hula Festival Week,” the release states.
The dancers from Kaua‘i include Kaimalie Alquiza, Koanilea Alquiza-Kenney, Kamululi’i Alquiza-Kenney, Alana Bailey, Jayel Balaan, Jamelyn Decosta-Caalim, Kaya Joy Estrada, Chyna Fernandez, Nia Genegabus, Kaira Kelekoma, Madison Lopez, Javlynn Lee Mexia, Shaylene Pantil, Qiyrah Rapanot, Tiana Rita, Kylea Salomon, Kaui Samio, Taryn Taguma and Kyrie Linoz.
