Following a day’s worth of errands and a grueling trip to Motor Vehicle Registration, I sought out an early dinner and happy hour to ease the pain of waiting in line for an hour to renew my driver’s license. Where I ended up was Scotty’s Beachside BBQ in Kapa‘a.
As I walked in, I was welcomed by a massive open air window overlooking the beach and ocean and was promptly handed a happy hour menu.
With myriad different drink and food deals, I landed on Scotty’s special Mai Tai. Generally I’m not a huge fan of fruity drinks, but when you’re overlooking the beach, it’s awfully easy to be swayed.
Many of the people at Scotty’s get lost in the view. With a dozen or so of the tables right at the window, it’s not uncommon for a tourist or local gaze to be lost in the waves.
But it’s the lure of the barbecue that brings the gaze back. I’ve been to Scotty’s one prior time and ordered the sandwich sampler. The dish comes with three mini sandwiches, one pulled pork, one brisket and the other a barbecued chicken. Each one was delicious and the accompaniment of one of the three different types of barbecue sauce available only added to the experience.
But as transfixed by the ocean as I was on this day, I opted for the fish and chips made with fresh mahi-mahi. As the soft-rock music played gently from the speakers and I dove into my meal — of course I mixed in a little barbecue sauce with the tartar — I was miles away from the earlier stresses of the day.
Scotty’s BBQ is located at 4-1546 Kuhio Highway and is open Monday through Saturday, 7 to 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
