The Kawaihau Big League All Stars are hosting fundraising car washes this weekend in Waimea and in Lihu‘e to help with expenses of traveling to the zone tournament in Washington later this month.
Coach Kirk Correa said the team will be having a car wash, Saturday at the Waimea Canyon School park and also at the Lihu‘e Chevron from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The car wash in Lihu‘e will also take place Sunday at the Lihu‘e Chevron from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Kawaihau Big League All Stars is made up of players from all parts of the island, including all three of the public high schools. The high school players are joined by Dallas Correa who just graduated St. Louis High School and Taran Tani who just completed his freshman year in college.
These boys came together, June 27 to win the Big League state title in Hilo, earning the right to advance to the Regional Tournament in Kitsap, Bremerton and Seattle, Wash., July 16 through 22.
Kawaihau, the representative from Hawai‘i, will open the tournament in Pool B, July 16 against Northern California starting at 7:30 p.m. They also play July 17 against Montana, again at 7:30 p.m. Its third game in pool play is July 20 against Oregon, starting at 7:30 p.m.
July 21 is reserved for semifinal play and the championship is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., July 22, according to the Little League website.
The Big League World Series will be played July 27 through Aug. 3 in Ersley, South Carolina.
“We are seeking any type of support from our friends and family in the community to help with the cost of traveling to Washington, and hopefully, to the Big League World Series,” a spokesperson from the league said.
When the team arrived on Kaua‘i with the state title, a player indicated that if successful at the Regional Tournament, the team advances directly to the Big League World Series.
