PO‘IPU — A 50-year-old male visitor from California died on Sunday while swimming in the waters that front the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club in Po‘ipu, county officials confirmed Tuesday.
At approximately 1:10 p.m., Robert Gomez of Redondo Beach began having trouble and passed out prior to reaching the shore, according to witness accounts. He is believed to have gone into cardiac arrest.
Bystanders assisted until lifeguards arrived on scene and began performing CPR with a defibrillator.
Firefighters also responded and assisted until medics arrived. Medics took over efforts to resuscitate the victim en route to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said the death has not been classified as a drowning. An autopsy is scheduled.
