Mokihana distance trials a great send-off to Jarry

Kaitlin Santos was still feeling the effects of the Mokihana Aquatics Distance Timed Trials, Sunday while volunteering at the 23rd annual Taste of Hawai‘i at Smith’s Tropical Paradise.

Coach Orlando “O” Anaya said Mokihana hosts the distance timed trials separately from its other timed trials because of the toll distance swimming takes on the swimmers’ bodies.

“I’m still aching,” Santos said, getting a nod of agreement from Kaitlyn Jarry who swam her final meet with Mokihana Aquatics.

Santos posted times in the Mixed 1000 Free (13:15.41) and the Mixed 400 Individual Medley (5:45.92).

Jarry finished with a 5.25 improvement in the Mixed 500 Free (6:06.99), her best event over five swims in two days.

Sara Funtanilla, 9, had one of the great swims, shaving 9.09 off her Mixed 100 Free (1:28.34) and Christopher Harvey, 8, cut 5.08 off his Mixed 100 Free (2:41.48).

Makanani Mersberg, 12, chopped 4.95 off his Mixed 100 Free (1:20.66) and Micah-Kamuela Nobriga-Ferris, 14, shaved 2.59 off his Mixed 100 Free (1:03.68). Xaveria Rodriguez, 9, took off 1.95 in her Mixed 100 Free (1:53.47) and Gracie Stokes, 11, sliced 4.72 from her Mixed 100 Free (1:09.44).

Alana Tamashiro, 11, had a 7.19 chop off her Mixed 100 Free (1:24.03) and Ryan Valenciano, 16, cut 0.86 off his Mixed 100 Free (1:01.99).

Jake Valenti, 7, improved 3.73 in his Mixed 100 Free (2:48.23) and Kayana Yamaguchi, 13, had a 4.42 in her Mixed 100 Free (1:14.39).

“The swimmers were awesome,” Anaya said. “What a great trials and Kailyn’s send-off was such a special moment. We’ll be having more of these in the future.”
