KAPA‘A — Bryan Andres came up with 15 points and Alan Alamug added a dozen marks to lead Manny’s Sports in their 62-38 run over Hanakila, Thursday in one of three 18 and Over Men’s basketball games at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
In the second matchup, Kapa‘a High School standout guard Willis Batol finished with a game-high 17 points, but the effort fell short. H1 and 1 was the 52-43 winner, staying ahead of the Kaua‘i Ballers from the onset.
Brandon Palacio from the Waimea High School basketball program piloted the pink-shirted Bus Drivers to a 72-62 edge over the Warriors in the finale of the opening night for the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association and County of Kaua‘i 18 and Over Men’s program.
Andres, who fueled the Manny’s Sports win, knocked down a trio from outside the three-point line, one each shredding the net in the second, third and final periods. Matt Lindsey, finishing the game with six points, hit Manny’s Sports’ only other three-ball in the second frame.
Mike Stevens, who also plays on a younger Hanakila squad, topped the North Shore scoring with 10 points, including a pair of treys. James Paik added a three-ball in the opening frame toward his eight points, followed by Mark Roslin dropping a trey in the final period and totaling seven points, all coming in the final stanza.
Batol was perfect at the free-throw line, going six-of-six, and added a triple in the fourth stanza toward his game-high 17 points for the Kaua‘i Ballers.
Batol’s lead was bolstered by another Warrior standout, Kainoa Colipano, who finished with eight points. Keane Agoot, who joined the Warrior program during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season, added seven points, including a three-ball in the third frame.
Player-coach Tab Matsumoto steered the H1 and 1 with 16 points, including a three-ball in the third.
Jeff Schlueter dropped a trey in the final frame when H1 and 1 ignited for 17 points, finishing with 11 points. Canaan Higa, a standout for Island School during the KIF season, dropped six points, followed by Trent Thompson, David Medeiros and Sean Allen adding four points apiece.
Randy Vicoy had a game-high 17 points, but the effort came up short for the Warriors, who battled the Bus Drivers throughout the night. Emery Souza finished the night with an 11-point contribution.
Palacio topped the Bus Drivers’ victory with 16 points, followed by Kaili Schumacher-Lagundino and Jim Aronica adding 10 points apiece.
KYBA hosts three games, a Boys 14 Under and two Girls 14 Under contests, today at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center starting at 9 a.m.
Hanakila hosts the Kaua‘i Ballers in a B14U matchup at 9 a.m., followed by the Kamikaze tangling with Team Lihu‘e at 10 a.m. Kaulupono takes on the Kaua‘i Ballers in the final G14U match starting at 11 a.m.
