LIHU‘E — The boys state golf championships finished up on Wednesday, as ‘Iolani’s Lorens Chan captured a four-stroke victory with a two-round total of 133.
The 2011 David S. Ishii Foundation HHSAA Boys Golf Championship was played at Waikoloa Village Golf Course on the Big Island, as Chan won his second state individual title with his 11-under par performance.
Having also won the 2009 event, Chan beat out Moanalua’s Tyler Ota and Punahou’s Kalena Preus in second place, each firing a 7-under 137.
According the 808 Golf website, Chan’s 133 total (66-67) was good for a 36-hole record low score.
The highest Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation player was Kaua‘i High School’s Pono Tokioka, who finished with a 7-over par 151, putting him in a tie for 33rd place in the 96-player field. Tokioka fired a 76 on the opening day, then came back with a 75 — including a 35 on the front nine — on the second, and final day.
Kapa‘a High School’s Kenji Miyata was second from the KIF, only a stroke behind Tokioka, shooting a 152. He opened with a 77, then followed with a 75 to finish in a tie for 39th place.
Tokioka’s teammate Reyn Morioka improved five strokes on his opening-round 81, shooting a 4-over par 76 on the second day to finish with a 157.
That tied him in 58th place with Kapa‘a’s Weston Moniz, who shot an opening-round 77, followed by an 80 for his 157 total.
Braeden Robley was not far behind, as the Red Raider shot a 77 and an 82 for a 159 total, tied for 65th place.
Kaua‘i’s Kai Adachi scored a first-round 78, then followed it up with an 88 for a 166.
Vance Tokita rounded out the Red Raiders’ team total, shooting a 90 and a 95 for a 185 total.
Kaua‘i finished in sixth place in the team standings, totaling 633 shots among its five players.
The team trophy went to Punahou (574), which eked out the victory by a single stroke over runner-up ‘Iolani (575), with Moanalua (576) just one behind in third.
Waiakea was fourth (581) and Lahainaluna (602) rounded out the top five.
Campbell (636) finished seventh and Aiea (640) was eighth.
