KAPA‘A — An aspiring pediatrician, fireman and pharmacist were honored for their high school achievements and volunteerism, Tuesday at the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital Auxiliary luncheon.
Amber Duldulao, the daughter of Balthazar and Perla Duldulao will be graduating Waimea High School and plans to attend Eastern Oregon University aiming for the pre-pharmacy program in preparation for a career as a pharmacist, states a Mahelona Hospital release.
Duldulao, whom Kaua‘i became familiar with due to her prowess on the Menehune Air Riflery team, is a member of the Army JrROTC, Menehune Battalion, the Waimea High School Filipino Club, the Waimea track team and is the president of the Waimea High School Leo Club.
She is the recipient of a four-year ROTC scholarship.
Melissa Miner, the daughter of Matthew and Melanie Miner, will be graduating Kaua‘i High School and heading to Brigham Young University, Idaho where she plans to pursue a path leading to her becoming a pediatrician.
President of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council and a member of the Spanish Club at Kaua‘i High School, Miner also played with the Red Raiders’ JV girls basketball team while balancing healthcare volunteer work in the Activities Department of the Regency at Puakea, the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank and Salvation Army.
She currently is employed at the Eye Care Center.
Tyrus Moises, captain of the Kapa‘a High School football and boys volleyball teams, is the son of Sam and Holly Moises and will be graduating Kapa‘a High School on May 20.
Heading to the University of Hawai‘i, Hilo, Moises plans on pursuing a degree in Nursing in preparation for his career as a firefighter.
Moises, recently attaining the rank of Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Scouting program, was also an active member of the Kapa‘a Outrigger Canoe Paddling program and the Warriors track team whose boys recently captured the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title.
“The Mahelona Hospital Auxiliary has been presenting awards to deserving high school seniors on Kaua‘i for 20 years,” said Betty Matsumura, president of the auxiliary who presented each of the recipients a $500 cash scholarship. “We are pleased to support and encourage students going into the medical field and are happy to be able to present awards to students from all three of Kaua‘i’s public high schools.”
Funds for the scholarship are derived through the Mahelona Hospital Thrift Shop which is located in the hospital and open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The shop is staffed by the auxiliary members.
