LIHU‘E — Significant rain delays on Maui affected the schedule for the first day of the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State Tennis Championships, but the top two players from the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation each made it through into the quarterfinals.
Kapa‘a High School’s Chas Okamoto, the No. 1 seed in Boys Singles, breezed through his first two rounds, coming up with wins over Hilo’s Daniel Tada and Waiakea’s Isaiah Brilhante, each by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
He will now take on Punahou’s Issei Funatsu today in the quarters at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Complex. Funatsu pulled out an upset in the second round, eliminating No. 8 seed Kaito Mizutani of Waiakea, 6-3, 1-6 (8).
Mililani’s Jireh Lin knocked out Island School’s Sam Dunham by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the first round.
In the Girls Singles draw, No. 3 seed Sarah Kukino, of Kaua‘i High School, saw a familiar face in the second round as she went up against fellow KIF competitor Lanie Rae Green, of Waimea High School. Kukino got the best of Green, moving into the quarters 6-1, 6-4.
Kukino took her first-round match, 6-0, 6-2 over Kaiser’s Tasha Shaik. Green was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Seabury Hall’s Tara Mcbarnet.
Kukino was the only Girls Singles player into the quarterfinals as of the most recent update from HHSAA.
Both KIF Girls Doubles teams made it into the second round of play. Kaua‘i High School’s duo of Shay Orial and Jennifer Grady topped their Lahainaluna opponents, Melissa Taketa and Tauley Montez, by a 6-1, 7-5 score. They will now take on the No. 6-seeded team of Andrea Baysa and Brooke Alcuran of ‘Iolani.
From Island School, Madison Duarte and Meghan Perius were a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Pearl City’s Jem Gasmen and Christina Agena. They now advance to the second round, though their opponent was not yet known.
In Boys Doubles, the Kaua‘i team of BJ Kai and Otis Llewellyn won a 6-1, 6-7 (3), (8) first-round match over Kamehameha-Big Island’s Shaun Kagawa and Keoni Wong. But they were then eliminated in the second round by the No. 6 seed, Cody Lau and Ty Tanaka of Kalani.
Their Raider teammates, Matthew Kanna and Jerik Centeno were barely edged out in the first round, falling to Kaiser’s Bailey Tacub and Eric Wolfe, 6-3, 3-6, (8).
Matches will continue today at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Complex and the Lahaina Civic Center as the tournament will try to make up matches that were bumped by Thursday’s weather.
The championship and third-place matches are currently scheduled to all be played Saturday morning.
