LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School’s Kelli Oride finished tied for sixth place at the 2011 David S. Ishii Foundation Hawai‘i High School Association Girls Golf Championships, Wednesday at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.
The top girls golfer in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation competition, Oride fired a 75 on Wednesday, following a 79 in Tuesday’s first round for a 154 tournament total.
Her 75 was the third-best score among the 66-golfer field during the event’s second day. Oride was tied for 19th place after Tuesday, but her four-stroke improvement sent her back towards the top of the leaderboard.
She finished seven shots behind first-place finisher Eimi Koga of Moanalua, who fired a tournament-best 70 on Tuesday, followed by a 77 for a 147 total.
Koga shot a 151 in the 2010 event, finishing tied for fifth place.
Last year, Oride just missed out on the state championship, finishing with a 148 and coming up one shot behind first place. She took second by herself.
Oride’s Raider Wahine teammates Taylor Viquelia and Daezsa Tomas finished tied for 17th and 28th place, respectively. Viquelia shot a 158 (80-78), while Tomas shot a 163 (82-81).
As a team, the trio took fourth place with its 475 total team score. The championship was won by Punahou (458), followed by Waiakea (467) and Baldwin (468) in the top three.
Punahou’s win was its fifth straight girls team championship. Moanalua was the last school other than Punahou to win (1996).
Finishing tied for second in the individual competition — just one stroke behind champion Koga — was ‘Iolani’s Marissa Chow (74-74) and Baldwin’s Cassy Isagawa (72-76). Isagawa was the 2010 state champion, shooting a 147 at the Turtle Bay Resort to edge Oride by one shot.
Punahou’s Alina Ching took fourth (72-77) and University’s Alice Kim was fifth (78-72). Kim’s 72 Wednesday was the day’s best total.
Oride and Waiakea’s Nani Yanagi (78-76) tied for sixth, with Kalaheo’s Monique Ishikawa (79-76) and Kamehameha-Maui’s Shannon Abarra (74-81) tied for eighth. Punahou’s Kacie Komoto (77-79), Waiakea’s Cierra Min (77-79) and Punahou’s Cyd Okino (77-79) all tied for 10th place.
The boys tournament will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, back at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. Start times have not yet been released.
