Although we try to eat healthy and exercise routinely, I believe it’s okay to have a cheat day. This is the day where you can eat what you want when you want, (proportionately though). But anything goes on that day, so I know just the place that will fulfill that need. The only place known for a guaranteed Kaua‘i smile: “Smiley’s Local Grinds.” If you’re from Hawai‘i, you know all about certain local dishes you grew up on. Well, you can find your entire child hood menu here and you won’t be disappointed. And if you’re not born or raised here, I am sure you will get into their homemade dishes, so get ready to ask for the recipe, because it’s that good. You get a home-like feeling there that makes you want to bring your kids or even bring the grandparents. There is something for everyone to smile about.
Located in the heart of Lihu‘e next to Ace Hardware, you can find Smiley’s cozied up next to other restaurants and business shops. As you walk inside, you’re greeted with a smile. If you a regular customer, you probably already know what you want and will order a plate to go. But as you know, I had to sit myself down and take the experience in. This family operated establishment has been open in Lihu‘e for more than five years. By word of mouth you may hear about this place, because it’s not your typical over-advertised restaurant. It’s a local treasure that only the locals know about.
Let’s talk about their ono loco moco. Two eggs covered with gravy over their homemade burger patty just brings back memories of when my mom used to make it. If you’re like me, it’s all about the gravy and rice found on underneath the egg and patty. I know it’s going to take a walk to burn this off, but I promise it is worth the extra exercise because you will make your tummy oh so happy. If you want to try more than one choice, order the combination plate. You can get the loco moco and the chicken katsu. With a big serving like the regular plate, you can share with your kids, or if it’s just for you, then you have the option of ordering the mini plate.
I can’t say enough goodthings about this restaurant. But I know I don’t need to on Thursdays because their well-known prime rib speaks for itself. Had a long day at work and want to eat something upscale but don’t feel like dressing up? Call in your prime rib to go, and before you head home stop by to pick it up; you can have it your way here, and their service is fast. You can even have the prime rib during lunch or dinner. What a great idea for the local people who don’t always want to go to a fancy restaurant to get that ono prime rib. And did I mention it won’t break the bank? The one big order of prime rib is only $11, I kid you not.
Head over to Smiley’s Local Grinds Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for lunch and from 5 p.m to 8:30 p.m. for dinner. But remember, after all those prime rib orders they need to take a day off on Sundays, so call them at (808) 245-4772 to get your order in or directions to the one-of-a-kind local grinds. If you want that local experience then get ready to smile, because like the locals say “It’s going to broke your mouth!”
