Sometimes serious news spurs a song or two in the comments section of The Garden Island’s website. This was the case last week when the latest developments reported on an attempted murder trial prompted a revised rendition of an old tune by The Who:
“Behind Red Eyes”
(Lyrics by Payback)
No one knows what it’s like
To be pavillionaires
To be such nightmares
Behind red eyes
No one knows what it’s like
To be pathetic
Even a rank chick
Won’t hug us guys
But our dreams, they aren’t as empty
As our wallets seem to be
Come and dance with “Crazy Carrie”
Watch out for her machete
No one knows what it’s like
To make excuses
For drug abuses
On this public land
No one knows how it feels
From this park bench
Could it be our stench
They cannot stand?
But our dreams, they aren’t as empty
As our wallets seem to be
Come and dance with “Crazy Carrie”
Watch out for her machete
When I’m thinking of
employment
Please remind me to get real
I like sleeping in until noon
It’s much easier to steal
If I swallow some magic mushrooms
Put your finger down my throat
Drag my body up to the ocean
Throw me in, let’s see if I float
No one knows what it’s like
To be pavillionaires
To be such nightmares
Behind red eyes
I can’t condone the cackling chorus that ensued online because I can’t separate myself from the reality that inspired this ditty. A human’s life was allegedly threatened and another’s was put in the hands of her peers. These community members may live outside the norms of our society, but pavilionaires are people too.
