New president and CEO for Easter Seals
Majken Mechling has been named president and chief executive officer of Easter Seals Hawai‘i, a statewide non-profit organization that provides programs and services for people of all ages with developmental disabilities, a press release said.
She will officially begin her new position on May 1.
As President and CEO, Mechling will provide leadership for ESH’s fundraising, personnel, finances, and programs, including Early Intervention Programs, Home and Community Based Services and Youth Services. ESH currently has 500 employees on five islands, providing services to more than 5,000 individuals and 500,000 hours of direct service through its programs each year.
The search process for ESH’s new president and CEO began more than a year ago when John Howell, who has served as ESH President and CEO for 18 years, initially announced his plans for retirement to the ESH Board of Directors. An Executive Search Committee was formed in April 2010 to develop and execute a year-long strategic plan to select and transition a new President and CEO for ESH.
John Howell will remain with ESH to oversee the development and completion of $13 million in capital projects on four islands. Howell plans to retire from ESH when the building projects have been completed in the summer of 2012.
Mechling was selected from a pool of more than 200 candidates from around the nation.
“Although we had many qualified candidates applying for the position, it became very clear to us we had the perfect mix of leadership skills, vision, passion and a proven track record of success in Majken, everything needed to build and expand on ESH’s success,” said Mason Williams, ESH’s board chairman and member of the CEO Search Committee. “We need a leader who can continue to grow ESH’s high quality programs and services and expand the organization’s fund development capacity as we continue to navigate through very challenging economic times. Majken fits this role perfectly.”
