In hope of limiting traffic-related deaths and other accidents, the Kaua’i Police Department has increased its enforcement efforts on Kaua‘i’s roads.
So far, that has meant more than 2,000 tickets last month and 55 drinking and driving arrests, 20 of which occurred in March.
According to a county press release, police issued 2,182 traffic citations, 1,100 of which were for moving violations that month. More than 400 were speeding citations and police say 153 citations occurred in construction zones. Officers also gave tickets for 139 seatbelt violations, as well as 117 for the use of mobile electronic devices while operating a vehicle.
“Police officers are working extremely hard to enforce our traffic laws. Our goal is to minimize traffic crashes and fatalities and to address the concerns of the community regarding speeding and other violations,” Captain Michael Contrades of the Patrol Services Bureau said in the press release.
Since the start of the year, Kaua‘i has seen three traffic-related fatalities, two were alcohol related and two involved speeding. There were a total of 10 traffic-related fatalities last year, four of which involved alcohol.
“We ask that everyone drive safely and obey traffic laws to reduce accidents and fatalities. We are all responsible for keeping our roadways safe,” Contrades said.
