“Amen!” After a two-hour church service, my three kids were ready to go and wanted me to praise their tummy’s appetite. But where was our next eating adventure going to be, I pondered?
“How about Olympic Café, just a few minutes away?” said Maile Yamamoto, my best friend.
So off we went with my three kids and her daughter to the upper level restaurant in the heart of Kapa‘a town.
Once we got there, we were surrounded by tables filled with people from all walks of life, and greeted with a smile from the awesome staff. We didn’t even sit down, and the view from the second floor just blew our minds away. Every turn was interesting.
There was a sports bar to watch some sports and drink a beer or two, and a hot sauce table that made me smile (yes, I am a spice lover).
As we sat down in our booth, our waitress came to our rescue with the menus. I was overwhelmed by the different types of dishes. For instance, they served breakfast like the spinach scramble or the kalua pig burrito. Of course you can order the old fashion two eggs that come with toast, papaya or melon and your choice of any meat like ham, bacon or sausage. But we were a little late for breakfast so we looked through the lunch column.
Where do I start, I thought to myself as I prepared to order lunch. Okay, kids first, right? So I ordered the quesadilla for my three kids. It was so big there were leftovers. And it was so cheesy, and came with a side order of fresh sliced avocados, homemade salsa and sour cream. The kids sure gave me a big smile after their tummies were filled with the cheesy quesadilla.
“Now how do I stay committed to my new healthy diet?” I asked myself. Of course, you know I browsed through the salad section. What did I find there? Well, if you must know, a big order of grilled chicken salad. The organic mixed greens were topped with sliced avocado, tomatoes, cucumbers, kalamata olives, chicken and artichoke hearts (my favorite), and served with lime cilantro dressing. At that moment, I couldn’t have been any more satisfied.
Each order was so big, you actually didn’t mind sharing and trying each other’s dish. I was so impressed by staff; they welcomed us like we were family. They didn’t mind my noisy kids or the mess they made. Friendly staff is the key, especially in a busy restaurant. One of my kids was having the normal table tantrum, but I didn’t get looked at, merely a friendly smile and how-can-we-serve-you kind of attitude.
I was so happy to see the bill. Really, I was, because to my surprise it didn’t break the bank. Having three kids to feed sure can be expensive, but to my surprise it was under $40 including my cool virgin Lava Flow.
I would definitely come back and bring my guest back, too. With different choices of dishes to choose from and a friendly staff, it’s tough to beat.
If you need driving directions or hours of operation you can call (808) 822-5825. But before you go there, mentally prepare yourself because their dishes are so big, you will truly feel like you’re at the Olympics going for the gold.
