LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a golfer Kenji Miyata fired a one-under par 71 to lead the Warrior team to its first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation first-place finish, Saturday at the Puakea Golf Course.
Kaua‘i golfer Kelli Oride, playing without the benefit of her two teammates, Daezsa Tomas and Taylor Viquelia, carded the best score of the day at two-under par 70 in blustery, windy conditions.
Mariah Paiste topped the Menehune wahine golfers with a 96 followed by Kawena Warren ending with a 126. Kapa‘a golfer Meleane Moala overcame the wind to finish with a 143, her best outing in the current KIF season.
“The golfers are having a real rough time out there,” one of the KIF volunteers said of the weather conditions. “There was one golfer who took a 15 on a par 3 with a water hazard. He kept dunking balls in the pond.”
The frustration of the golfers was clearly obvious as Kaua‘i golfer Justin “Pono” Tokioka tossed his ball into the gulley following his battle with the elements at the No. 9 green.
Tokioka retained his No. 1 spot for the Red Raiders, who finished with a team total 350, nine strokes back of Kapa‘a. Tokioka ended the day with a four-over par 76 followed by Braeden Robley (80), Reyn Morioka (84) and Vance Tokita (110) for the team scoring.
Kenneth Chun (110) and Logan Keeler (125) were other Raiders on the course.
Miyata marked the second time in four weeks to top the Kapa‘a boys scoring with his 71. Justin Uegawa, overcoming an official’s ruling near the out-of-bounds on the No. 9, finished with an 83 for the second spot and Weston Moniz, the top Warrior scorer for two of the four weeks, ended in the No. 4 spot with a 94, just one stroke of the 93 posted by Jordan Guerrero.
Other Warriors on the course include Anthony Aiwohi (97), Mitchell Alves (86) and Sage Lane (100).
With its first KIF win, Kapa‘a remains at No. 2 overall with nine points, two points back of Kaua‘i at 11 points. Waimea rounds out the standings with four points after finishing the Saturday round with a team total 412.
Clifton Callejo topped the Waimea scoring with a 99 followed by brother Derek and Nahe Manoi-Resinto tying for the No. 2 spot with a 103. Vinda Carrineo rounded out the team scoring with a 107.
KIF golf moves to the Kaua‘i Lagoons, Saturday, with the first group leaving at noon.
