This movie is an absolute delight from start to finish, keeping you on your comedic toes. “Little Miss Sunshine” was released as a small film, meaning it wasn’t some $500 million epic. It was an instant classic, finding most of its audience on DVD. The film spread like wildfire amongst DVD viewers. Everyone I spoke to recommended it and my friend who never buys movies bought it. I remember he lent it to me and I was a little hesitant. The hype was too much. By the time 20 minutes passed, I laughed so hard I almost wanted to stop watching. My girlfriend at the time and I ended up borrowing this movie four or five times over the next few months.
What makes this film work is a highly original script with exceptionally well-drawn characters and amazing dialogue delivered by a fantastic ensemble cast. The casting of this movie has to be one of the best in comedy movie history. I don’t believe any other group of actors could have pulled it off. This film was nominated for Best Picture and the one thing the Academy seldom does (I can’t think of five films) is nominate a comedy for the biggest prize on Oscar night.
This is a movie for which I don’t want to spoil one second of the plot. I suggest it because you see Steve Carrell as a character other than his comedic roles, Oscar Nominee Greg Kinnear (“As Good as it Gets” ) gives his best performance since the aforementioned film. The little girl who is the film’s centerpiece even received an Oscar nod for this film and she’s like 10 years old. The script, editing and film are all a fun ride; no pun intended, since the movie is about a road trip.
I wanted to take the time to mention that the Lihu‘e Library Film Club is on hiatus (not over). I apologize, but for you movie fans, your chance at two free movies a month is on hold. However, check in with the library; we will be having some screenings of foreign films that you will only see if you go to LA or NYC. I want to thank The Garden Island for letting the club mention what has been screening.
This column is also going to take a new direction. I’ve decided to try out making it so you never know what film will pop up. It may be a comedy, drama, classic or musical.
I’m going to steer clear from “theme” months. Enjoy the top ten. Most titles are in Lihu‘e library’s film collection. Also, email your favorite movie and it just may end up in the newspaper. pkb_1@hotmail.com
