PUHI — Island School boys tennis took its series, 3-2, over Kaua‘i High School, but the Red Raider girls controlled its series, 4-1, Saturday at the Kaua‘i Community College tennis courts.
Sam Dunham opened with an audience cheering him on in his defeat of Kaua‘i High Schools B.J. Kai in the Boys first singles, 6-1, 6-0.
On the neighboring No. 2 Boys Singles court, Island School’s Ryan Perez shared in the fanfare with his defeat of Mathew Mizukami, 6-2, 6-1, the Red Raider experiencing high school competition for the first time, according to his parents.
Logan Domingo and Jeremy Randolph-Flagg provided the swing match for Island School when the Boys first doubles pair overcame the Red Raider pair of Otis Llewellyn and Jerik Centeno, 6-3, 6-2.
Kaua‘i boys took the remaining matches, Lance Matsumoto teaming with Radd Floria to defeat the Island School duo of Dylan Morrison-Fogel and Ben Steuri, 6-1, 6-0.
Kevin Jian paired with Justin Fujikawa to defeat the Island School team of Adian Dungan and Christian Potter, 6-3, 6-1 in the boys third doubles.
The tables in the girls singles were switched when Kaua‘i Sarah Kukino had an audience as she defeated April Oo, 6-1, 6-0 on the Girls No. 1 Singles court.
On the Girls No. 2 Singles court, Shea Orial utilized a mixed bag of strokes to defeat Island School’s Haley Uliana who had a nice fanbase sitting outside the court.
On the girls doubles court, Jennifer Grady and Jasmine Ikeda defeated the Island School duo of Megan Perius and Tessa Mason on the No. 1 Doubles court while Kari Noe and Noelani Murray got past the Island School pair of Stephanie Steuri and Lauren Claypoole on the No. 2 Doubles court.
Island School’s sole win on the girls court came in the No. 3 Doubles when Michaela Sullivan and Lauren Spears teamed to edge out Kaua‘i’s pair of Gillian Gregorio and Danika Thompson, 6-1, 7-5.
Kaua‘i hosts Waimea this Saturday at the Kaua‘i Lagoons courts starting at 10 a.m. and Island School will host Kapa‘a at the KCC courts starting at noon.
