The Kaua‘i Beekeepers Association will host a public meeting Tuesday at the Kaua‘i Community College Electronic and Technology Building starting at 6 p.m.
Darci Oishi of the state Department of Agriculture will be introducing Danielle Downey, the state’s recently hired apiary specialist who is based at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, a news release states.
Oishi and Downey will present the state’s plan for assisting local beekeepers and helping keep Kaua‘i free from the small hive beetle and the varroa mite.
Downey, as apiary specialist, is the first component of the joint HDOA Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit Apiary program which will also include a planner and technician.
The focus of the program will be to help beekeepers adopt best management strategies for varroa mite, help prevent the spread of varroa mite to islands currently free of the pest, build better relationships and communication between beekeepers, growers, and government, assist in growing beekeeping industries within Hawai‘i, and enhance public awareness of the impacts the loss of bees will have on Hawai‘i and the world.
