The Kapa‘a Warriors took one step towards playing for a state championship as they knocked off the Konawaena Wildcats, 3-1, in Thursday’s quarterfinal match at the JN Automotive/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Championships at the Waipi‘o Soccer Complex on O‘ahu.
The No. 2 seed in the Division II tournament, Kapa‘a (12-0) must now beat Hawai‘i Prep in today’s semifinal matchup to take center stage Saturday with a Div. II title on the line.
In remaining unbeaten on the season, Kapa‘a got goals from Joshua Cram, Max Domingcil and Max Goode en route to the win.
Cram opened up the scorebooks by giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. That was the only goal of the first half, as Konawaena (7-3-3) remained within reach.
The second goal was scored by Domingcil, who gave Kapa‘a some breathing room with his strike in the 47th minute.
Now leading 2-0, Goode all but put things away with a 64th-minute goal and the three-score advantage.
Konawaena’s Jaryt Takimoto was able to put the Wildcats on the board with a 67th-minute score, resulting in the final math.
Today’s semifinal against HPA (7-5-2) comes on the heels of its 3-1 win over No. 3 seed Waipahu (7-3-1), Thursday. Malachi Kobayashi scored a pair of goals (20’, 48’) for HPA, before Nathan Adams (51’) had the capper. Waipahu got on the board with a Mikel Garduke strike (65’), but it was too late to mount a charge.
Top seed Honoka‘a (9-2-2) held serve with a 2-0 win over Radford (7-3-3), both of its goals coming early in the first half.
Robert Connors put the No. 1 team up 1-0 in the fifth minute, followed shortly thereafter by Josh Robinson’s score in the eighth minute. The 2-0 score held the rest of the way.
Honoka‘a advances to take on No. 4 seed St. Anthony (6-6-1), which made it through after a defensive battle with Mid-Pacific (2-8-1), eventually taking a 1-0 win on penalty kicks.
The teams played a pair of scoreless halves, then two scoreless overtime periods to send the match into PKs, which St. Anthony won on a 3-1 count. Jeremy Maeda, Bryce Mizoguchi and Chris Maeda made their kicks, with Zachary Love putting his home for Mid-Pac.
All four of today’s Div. II matches will be played at 3 p.m.
Honoka‘a-St. Anthony will be on Field 11, Kapa‘a-HPA will be on Field 12.
Radford and Mid-Pac will play in the consolation fifth-place bracket on Field 9, with Konawaena and Waipahu matching up on Field 10.
Division I
Punahou (9-2-1) scored four times in the second half to knock off No. 3 seed Hilo (14-2-1), 4-0. Kaimi Fairbairn (53’), Mountain MItchell (61’), Alex Lam (67’) and Quincy Marting (80’) were credited with the goals.
Kaiser (13-2-2) knocked off No. 4 seed King Kekaulike, 3-2. Kaiser scored the game’s first three goals, getting scores from Joshua Perry-Kruse (6’, 58’) and Brandon Ale (17’).
Logan Bantilan scored two late goals (72’, 79’) for King Kekaulike.
No. 2 Kapolei (11-5-1) survived a scare from Baldwin (7-3-4), notching the 2-1 win on penalty kicks.
Each team scored once in the first half, then went scoreless the rest of the way, before Kapolei took the PK session, 4-2.
Results from the No. 1 Kamehameha-Kapalama vs. Mililani match were unavailable as of press time.
Kapolei and Punahou will play in tonight’s final match in the Waipi‘o Main Stadium, kicking off at 7 p.m.
The first semifinal will be at 5 p.m. between Kaiser and the winner of Thursday’s late game.
Div. I semifinal matches will be shown live today on OC 16.
Saturday’s Div. I and II championship matches will both also be live on OC 16.
