WAIMEA — Jayme Jacinto and Brandee Victorino signed National Letters of Intent to play volleyball at Tacoma Community College, Tuesday afternoon at Waimea High School.
“This is so exciting,” Victorino said, while trying to coordinate with Jacinto on when to actually sign the letter in the school’s library.
On hand for the occasion was Waimea High School athletic director Jon Kobayashi, and volleyball coaches Chad Delanoza, Shawn Wisneski and Darrick Peleras, all involved with the two student-athletes during their careers at Waimea.
Both girls will be trading in their Menehune blues for TCC Titan black shirts.
Victorino will be heading to the Titans’ campus during spring break to see how the program works and what the campus and campus life is like.
Both will begin with the program in this year’s upcoming fall semester.
The outstanding Menehune volleyball pair will be joining the TCC Titans who finished the 2010 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges with a 12-0, 38-9 overall record in the West Region.
The NAAC, in its 2010 Volleyball All-Star release noted that Brandy Iverson, a sophomore, was listed as the West Region’s Most Valuable Player, and Angela Spoja, coach for the TCC Titans, garnered Coach of the Year honors in the West Region.
The Titans finished by placing a member on both the NAACC First Team and Second Team in the 32-member association of Northwest community college programs in the states of Washington and Oregon.
Jacinto said with the Letter of Intent, both she and Victorino will receive full ride scholarships for two years, playing volleyball.
“This is really exciting,” Jacinto, a multi-sport student athlete from Waimea, said. “We went to a clinic led by an assistant coach from TCC who went to school with Coach Chad. From there, the TCC coach approached us and spoke to us individually.”
That started the chain of events leading to the offer to play volleyball for the Titans, culminating with the letter signing, Wednesday.
Once the letters were signed, both girls let out a big sigh of relief, but Delanoza had one more twist, extracting two packages containing plaques.
“These are Most Valuable Players awards for the Waimea girls volleyball team,” Chad said. “All the coaches voted on them, and each one of you is an MVP.”
