PO‘IPU — “Do The Right Thing,” reads a sign outside the upstairs Merriman’s Kaua‘i restaurant in Po‘ipu.
Chef Kevin Ives of Merriman’s said during the holiday drive held within the teams of the Merriman’s Kaua‘i, upstairs and downstairs, the employees came up with about $550 in contributions.
“It’s hard to pick a charity,” said Ives. “But since Emily and Hannah Pierce both worked here as hostesses of Merriman’s upstairs, we decided we would support them since their parents, Dr. Ken and Diane, are working to help Haiti.”
Ives said Emily is over in Haiti with her mom helping at an orphanage in the earthquake- and hurricane-ravaged country, where human suffering runs rampant in one of the world’s poorest nations.
“Do you realize that one out of five children perishes and the average Haitian makes just a dollar a day?” Ives said. “This isn’t very much, but it can impact a group of children.”
Ives said the employee collection will be turned over to the Kaua‘i Christian Fellowship earmarked for the Haiti fund. The church is currently administering the fund for the Pierce family and aimed toward helping in Haiti.
“This is the right thing to do,” Ives said, pointing to the sign sitting above the entrance of Merriman’s Kaua‘i upstairs, taking a break from preparing fresh Kaua‘i grown tomatoes for a Roasted Tomato preparation utilizing the Kaua‘i tomatoes garnished with herbs, also grown on Kaua‘i.
Peter Merriman is no stranger to helping the community, several months ago, stepping forward to host a fundraising dinner to benefit the Kaua‘i United Way.
