KALAHEO — Kealii Colipano finished with 10 points, while Josh Blane and Michael Booth chipped in seven points each to lead the Flying Hawaiians to a 37-33 edge over Papalina-White, Monday night.
That was the first of three games as the county’s Parks and Recreation inaugurated its 2011 community basketball series at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Trailing throughout the first half, Papalina-White, coached by Matt Taba and Clyde Vito, came back against a 23-11 deficit to outgun the Flying Hawaiians in the second half, but still came up four points short. The Hawaiians are coached by former Kapa‘a High School starter Kekoa Colipano.
Papalina’s Nate Herbig, fouling out at the 3:48 mark, finished with a game-high 11 points. Daniel Fee stepped up to the chore of covering the missing low post and despite his aggressive play on blocks and boards, was limited to just two points in the showing.
Papalina guards, facing a height disadvantage, went to the three-ball, finishing with three on the night compared with two launched by the Flying Hawaiians.
Trey Taba’s six-point showing came on two fifth-period treys and Kai Lewis lit the net in the sixth frame with one, ending the night with five points, all coming in the final frame.
Joseph Cumlat, the younger brother of another Papalina standout, Jassem, did not let the height disadvantage slow him, finishing with seven points, including a 3-of-4 showing at the charity stripe.
Another Northshore team, Hanakila, asserted itself early en route to a 58-20 showing against the smaller West Kaua‘i Hornets.
Dave Aguinaldo topped all scorers with 13 points for Hanakila, followed by Christian Roslin and Jackeson McCullough adding nine points apiece.
Kicah Acoba topped the Hornets’ showing with eight points, six coming in the second half where West Kaua‘i collected 15 of its game-total 20 points.
King Blanes and Kamea Plana-Alquiza added five and four points, respectively in the effort.
Curren Dillberg netted a game-high 14 points to lead Papalina-Blue to a 50-31 win over the Kaua‘i Ballers in the final Monday outing.
He got help from Jassem Cumlat with 13 points and Kalawa‘ia Judd adding eight points.
Brooks Bethel led the K-Ballers, coached by Luther Yam, with 10 points and Justin Poskin added five points.
There are a total of 11 teams in the county’s program covering the Northshore through the Westside of Kaua‘i.
Other teams playing on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays include the K-Ballers with coach Cecil Gee and William Aki, Ho‘ouila with coach Peter Rayno, Papalina-Blue with coaches Taba and Vito, Westside Basketball coached by Dino Pabre, Team Central 1 and 2, both coached by Clarence Sales, and Team Extreme with coach Max Manera.
Hanakila is coached by Phil Baclayon, Mike Stevens and Roger Domingo, and the West Kaua‘i Hornets has Antonio Pope at the helm.
All of the county’s 11-12 teams will have a break this Saturday when its players are treated to a free clinic headed by former University of Hawai‘i Hilo Vulcan coach James Yagi at the Kaua‘i High School gym starting at 9 a.m.
