Fire officials are especially concerned about a new type of product being sold this year known as a Flying Luminary. The lantern is made of fire-retardant paper and once lit, lifts into the air and drifts until the flame goes out.
“Once released, there is no control over the object’s flight path or landing,” warns Captain Daryl Date with the Fire Prevention Bureau. “Should the lantern encounter flammable objects, it could potentially cause a fire.”
