LIHU‘E — A Brown Water Advisory was issued Sunday for Kaua‘i due to heavy showers.
The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, chemicals, and associated flood debris, according to the state Department of Health.
Watson Okubo of the Clean Water Branch said if coastal waters are turbid and brown, stay out.
A strong low pressure system was soaking Hawai‘i Sunday, causing at least one rockslide and damaging several cars in O‘ahu.
The National Weather Service said heavy showers with isolated thunderstorms could cause flash flooding in some areas Sunday and Monday.
Several areas on Kaua‘i received more than an inch of rain over the weekend. Kapahi received more rain than anywhere on the island at 2.73 inches in the 24-hour period ending at 2 p.m. Sunday, according to NWS rainfall summaries.
In parts of southeast O‘ahu, rain gauges recorded rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour early Sunday, according to the NWS.
A gauge on the Manoa Stream had risen to 15.1 feet by 1 p.m., indicating a likelihood of flash flooding in Manoa, according to the weather service.
The system was expected to dissipate late Monday, but showers were in the forecast for Hawai‘i throughout the rest of the week.
Forecasters said the storm system was also producing a large north swell, prompting a high surf advisory for north-facing beaches and for some east-facing shores.
