Pedestrian struck in Lihu‘e Thursday

LIHU‘E — A 20-year-old Lihu‘e woman, who was not identified, was struck by a motorist while crossing Kuhio Highway at around 7 a.m. Thursday, a county press release states.

The pedestrian, not in a marked crosswalk, was walking from the vicinity of the Subway restaurant towards McDonald’s when she was struck by a Toyota sport-utility-vehicle driven by a woman, 49, from ‘Ele‘ele, who was also unidentified.

The driver was traveling north on the highway.

The pedestrian sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital by American Medical Response ambulance professionals.

She was admitted to the hospital, though her condition was not known by press time.

Heavy rains, poor lighting and heavy traffic appear to be contributing factors, said Kaua‘i Police Department investigators.

The incident is still under investigation, the release states.
