It was an evening of gaming and low-key glitz and glamour Westside-style at the Waimea Plantation Cottage’s Casino Night last Saturday.
Staff was decked out in Vegas-style casino attire, replete with bow ties and ruffled shirts, and some guests, too, rose to the occasion clothing-wise, whether donning sequins or their best poker faces.
The no-host bar opened at 4 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. at the Grove Café, formerly the Waimea Plantation Brewery.
Guests were invited to have at it, whether by playing classic games such as poker or taking a gamble at blackjack or the roulette table.
The event was a fundraiser for the Hawai‘i District 50 Lions Governor’s Campaign, with several Kaua‘i district representation on-hand. Lions are known for trying to help meet the needs of local communities, but having representation from various areas in one spot was a bit unique.
Phil and Sandy Sterker of Kalaheo, who were dressed to kill that night, were among Lions club members showing their support for the event, along with support for Eric Nordmeier, as first vice district governor of Lions of District 50. Sandy Sterker said she was pleased that Casino Night was in Waimea, noting her hope for more events on the Westside.
Kaua‘i Fire Department Chief Bob Westerman was among the guests, as was former County Council candidate Ed Justus and his wife, Cynthia.
Those who were lucky partook of a prize auction, and were able to buy themselves rewards with their winnings.
Those who were less into the gaming and prizes and more into the heavy pupu got to munch on Korean-style meatballs, kalua-pork spring rolls, cucumber kim chee and perfectly salted edamame, while listening to musicians Charlie Iona and Russell Wellington.
