The 10th World Gateball Championships, held in Shanghai, China from Sept. 17-19, included members of the Kaua‘i Gateball Club as part the American contingent at the worldwide competition.
USA teams were comprised of players from Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Big Island, Alaska and California. In total, 13 countries made up the 92 teams in attendance with over 750 players participating.
The host country of China fielded 16 of the teams and took the top three places in the tournament.
Representing the Kaua‘i Gateball Club at the event were Ron and Kathy Aceret, John and Evelyn Perkins, Kaohu and Carolyn Cummings, Gilroy Yorkman and Marilyn Yamaguchi, Adele Rickford, Jeff Chandler, Daniel Nishiguchi, Reggie Rivera, John Lorenzo and Manny Lopez.
Before heading home, the group enjoyed its tour of China, which incuded seeing the sights of Shanghai, Pudong, Suzhou, Xian and Beijing.
The trip was highlighted by a visit to the famous Terra Cotta Warriors site and a walk on a portion of The Great Wall.
The members are looking forward to the next World Gateball Championships, which is scheduled for Japan in 2014. Until then, smaller tournaments with various gateball teams are being planned.
