Moani Genegabuas, currently a cheerleader with the Kaua‘i High School cheer squad, was named a National Pop Warner Little Scholarship winner during the 50th anniversary of the National Pop Warner Little Scholars awards banquet.
After winning the 2010 Wescon Regional Pop Warner Scholastic award during a gathering in Kona in March, Genegabuas’ application was forwarded to the national program for consideration of a National Scholarship by the PW Little Scholars Committee, said Millie Ah Hee, chair of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League Scholastic Committee.
This earned her a trip to Philadelphia where she was named one of the Top 15 finalists receiving a National Scholarship towards the college of her choice, Ah Hee said. In Philadelphia, Genegabuas was competing against a field of 421 First Team nominees, all seventh and eighth graders.
Pop Warner Little Scholars’ participants must maintain a grade point average of 96 percent, or better, in school to qualify for a scholarship. Each participant must also have volunteered and participated in community service.
Kelson Andrade was also selected for a Certificate of Achievement during the Wescon conference.
Ah Hee said the KPWFL announced its annual scholar-athletes at the league’s first game of the season, in lieu of the annual Jamboree.
Genessa Jardin, Alyssa Jardin and Harley Broyles from the Hanapepe Pop Warner Association were named to the Second Team for Cheer from the National placement on the list of All-American participants.
They were joined by Tobey Aguano and Genegabuas of the Koloa Pop Warner Association for Cheer honors, Aguano making the Second Team.
Chaz Pacleb and Dazmon Sasil of the Kapa‘a Eagles Pop Warner Association were named to the Second Team for tackle football. They were joined by Chanse Ramirez of the Lihu‘e Pop Warner Association and Andrade, Ramirez making the Second Team as well.
