LIHU‘E — Three new lieutenants and seven new sergeants have a combined 140 years of service with the Kaua‘i Police Department.
The recently promoted officers were honored Monday by their families, friends and KPD in a brief but poignant ceremony.
Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry said credit for the promotions should go to Assistant Chief Mark Begley who initiated the assessment process described as one of the most difficult procedures in the department.
Perry said within the ranks of the seven sergeants, there are also four detectives who face a job unlike that seen on the revived “Hawai‘i Five-O” and
“CSI” television series in which detectives solve complex crimes in less than an hour.
He said today’s new type of criminals have the advantage of the Internet and social networking media and learn how to thwart investigations and destroy evidence from all corners of the world.
Filling the ranks of detectives are James Miller with 12 years of service and James Rodriguez with 16 years of service, both assigned to General Detail in the Investigative Bureau.
Darren Rose, with 10 years of service, will be in the Vice Detail and Shane Sokei, with 15 years of service, will be in the White Collar Crime division.
The three new lieutenants are Michael Gordon, with 23 years of service, being assigned to the Administrative Bureau/Training.
Scott Kaui with 19 years of service, will be assigned to the Administrative Bureau/R&D, and Richard Rosa, with 17 years of service, will be in Uniform Patrol/Waimea District Commander.
Sgt. Kenneth Cummings will be in Uniform Patrol, Waimea Station, Platoon 3, and Sgt. Karen Kapua will be in Uniform Patrol, Waimea Station, Platoon 2.
Sgt. Rodrick Green will be in Uniform Patrol, Hanalei Station, Platoon 3.
Perry said his next area of focus is on promotions for captains.
Each of the honored officers had members of their family or a close friend pin on their new badges in the pinning ceremony that was part of the day’s festivities attended by members of the Mayor’s Office, the Kaua‘i County Council and county Police Commission.
