Although individuals earned top spots in numerous divisions, the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank came up as Sunday’s big winner at Duke’s Canoe Club’s first Classic Stand Up Paddle Race.
Kelvin Moniz, the food bank’s Director of Operations, said participants in the first event held at Kalapaki Bay contributed 328 pounds of food to the KIFB.
Competition at the paddle races was divided into three arenas: the Open Division with men and women age groups, the Co-Ed Relay and the Keiki.
Mainei Kinimaka topped the Keiki division, followed by Cal Anacleto and Maluhia Kinimaka.
Leleo Kinimaka, Kalani Vierra, Maluhia Kinimaka and Kawika Carvalho topped the Co-Ed division, followed by the team of Sam Randolph, Jeremy Randolf, Miguel Rodelo and Mariko Strickland.
Thom, Marleny Cotrim, Krishan Aruna and Wayne McIntosh rounded out the Co-Ed division in third place.
Strickland also topped the 18-29 Women age group of the Open Division followed by Casey Ford and Kourtney Bundy.
Aruna was tops in the 18-29 Men age group, followed by Sam Randolph and Jeremy Randolph.
Pam Corwin topped the 30-49 Women age group, followed by Kathy Bogdan and Sarah Thomas. Leleo Kinimaka topped the 30-49 Men age group, followed by Vierra and Matt Ives.
Darlene Daida-Martin topped the Women 50-plus age group, while Bobby Cock topped the Men 50-plus age group followed by Gary Butt and Tommy Pereza.
Winners received awards from several companies who contributed to the success of the event, states a release from Duke’s.
Quiksilver, Keoki’s Paradise, Kaua‘i Beach Boys, Tri-Paddle, Hukilau Lanai, Nawiliwili Yacht Club, Maui Jim, Alexander Day Spa and Salon, Kaua‘i Springs water, Tire Warehouse, King Auto Center, Mark’s Place and Contemporary Flavors Catering, Brick Oven Pizza, The Flight School of Kaua‘i, Duke’s Waikiki, Leilani’s, Kimo’s, Nelson Togioka, the KQNG Radio Group and the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club were key to the success of this event, the release states.
