Island School’s Pierce Murphy (far left) took first place at the ‘Iolani Cross Country Invitational, Saturday, at the Kualoa Ranch on O‘ahu. Murphy finished the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 25.92 seconds to take first by more than 25 seconds. His result makes him the top-ranked cross country runner in the state. Leilehua High School’s Margarito Martinez, who has had a friendly rivalry with Murphy through various competitions, was second in 15:51. The two have separated themselves as the top two distance runners throughout Hawai‘i’s high school landscape.
