LIHU‘E — Ka‘ena Henderson topped a field of keiki as the winner of the 14th annual 2010 Meadow Gold Healthy Baby Contest on Saturday afternoon at the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair.
Competing before an overflow big tent of people, Henderson’s makeup was smudged to just faint markings as he was announced the winner by host Ron Wiley of the KQNG Radio Group.
The red velvet crown apparently did not mesh well with Henderson’s Pacific Islander costuming as he promptly stripped the banner from his shoulder and shook his head to topple the crown.
The event wrapped up a long afternoon that started with the Meadow Gold and McDonald’s Restaurants Keiki Olympics and Entertainment which included competition in watermelon eating and poi eating interlaced with entertainment from the Showtime Characters, who will make an appearance Thursday at Kukui Grove Center, and a presentation by the Aloha Dance Studio.
Kamalei Gabriel was presented as Miss Babycakes in the baby contest with Joshua Keala Olores Jr. being named Mr. Super Dude.
Taitynn Garcia, dressed as a miniature cheerleader, captured the title of Keen Wahine, the keiki version of the costume phase of competition.
Titan Jedidiah Kaimana Leong donned a three-piece tuxedo to capture the Groovy Guy title as Garcia’s counterpart.
Tiare Nunes was moved to tears as she appeared on stage after being announced Miss Smiley Smile, the competition’s equivalent of the personality phase.
Tyler Thornton was named the Cool Kane as Nunes’ counterpart, all contestants being greeted by Lani Moo, the Meadow Gold mascot being handled by one of the Kaua‘i High School cheerleaders who were manning the Meadow Gold booth at the fair.
