LIHU‘E — Wednesday and Thursday are the only days when Kauaians will be able to discuss new island flood maps with federal officials before the maps take effect in November, state officials said.
Federal Emergency Management Agency officials, as well as those from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and county Department of Public Works, will be present at the meetings Wednesday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Kapa‘a Middle School cafeteria; and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon at Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center and 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Koloa Neighborhood Center.
The new flood maps may affect flood-insurance requirements, an earlier DLNR release stated.
Those with mortgages from federally regulated lenders with building(s) in the Special Flood Hazard Area are required by federal law to have flood insurance.
Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program, a federally underwritten program provided by nearly 100 insurance companies and written through licensed insurance agents.
Those without mortgages are still encouraged to purchase flood insurance, the release states.
