We rolled in with the waves, crashed at the bar and receded with an excellent evening under our belts.
Belly dancers delighted patrons with a special show last week at Oasis on the Beach. Their ancient art went well with the Basil Hayden’s on the rocks we were having.
But on we went.
Returning home late, the clear skies lent themselves to a nightcap on the lanai to scope the natural wonder above us and take a stab at naming a few constellations. A couple shooting stars later and it was time to call it a night.
Regardless of how stressful or scary, sad or simply stupid a day can be — yeah, even here in “paradise” — setting aside a few moments for a date with nature can serve as at least a temporary remedy.
I’m not sure I find meaning or a greater purpose or any of that in the moon’s reflection on the Pacific or the sun rising over Kealia, but it certainly soothes my soul.
Stopping to appreciate the time it took to create this island, for instance, puts our relatively short lives in perspective. Losing sleep over the petty disagreements or shallow attacks just isn’t worth it.
Staying focused on the positive difference we can make in the world — as cliché as that sounds — helps me wake up in the morning. Call me a dreamer, but change can happen… on a big scale or small.
As far as the latter goes, one recent example comes to mind. I realized I no longer like “Boondock Saints.” Until I finally watched the sequel, which utterly disappointed with weak characters and a lack of anything fresh, this fact hadn’t hit me.
I’m in a different place now than I was when I first fell in love with all the glorified violence in the first film. I guess over the years it now takes more than some cheap one-liners and an Irish accent to impress me. But that’s not to say I’m above such.
I thoroughly enjoyed “From Paris with Love,” which brought John Travolta back onto the screen in his coolest role since “Pulp Fiction” — complete with a “royale with cheese” line that made my week.
Perhaps we’ll explore some of these far-flung themes more at a future date, but space has run out on this column.
