LIHU‘E — Women In Theatre is offering a rare opportunity for theater aficionados to focus on the diverse aspects that make a theatrical performance successful, states a press release.
Everything you always wanted to know about theater arts: A course of six workshops offered by WIT beginning Aug. 16, will be held at Island School cafeteria on Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m.
Workshops include: Audition Skills with Romey Curtis, Aug. 23; Scene Study with Sandy O’Shaughnessy, Aug. 30; Improvisation with Richard Porto, Sept. 13; Scenic Design with Laurel Petterson, Sept. 20; the Art of Costuming with Mary McDermot, Sept. 27; and Introduction to Light and Sound Design.
Classes are $20 per session or $80 for all six. Minimum enrollment required. Call Romey to register, 826-9755.
Audition Skills: This session will help you to enjoy rather than dread the process and show how to make the most of your moment before the director. Trained at London’s Royal Academy, Curtis has worked in all aspects of professional and community theater.
Scene Study: Interpretation of script, means of exploring character, explores how to benefit most from the rehearsal process and communicate empathetically with director, cast and audience. A fully trained actor and director with New York experience, O’Shaughnessy is skilled in guiding the creative process of acting.
Improvisation: Learn the keys to freeing your imagination and your movement on stage, improving your confidence and interaction with other players. Porto has been an expert in the Viola Spolin improvisation techniques for over 15 years.
Scenic Design: Stages of design and practicalities; choices a designer and director must make to express an author’s vision and accommodate the action of their play. Petterson McGraw is an accomplished artist in several fields, including puppetry. Her work as a director bolsters her understanding of the designer’s contribution.
The Art of Costuming will illustrate how costume choices can enhance the intentions of the author and director of a play and express not only time and place, but also character type and social situation. McDermot is a professional costume designer for both stage and screen, with expert knowledge of costume construction and materials.
Introduction to Lighting and Sound Design: Explore how these vital elements serve a director’s vision and enhance performances. Workshop director to be confirmed.
