The Waimea High School all-girl cheer squad captured the Triple Treat Award for the third time, Monday on O‘ahu.
Under the leadership of coach Roxanne Cardejon, this year earning the Triple A Style Cheer Leadership Award, the Menehune squad finished the six-day experience by placing first in the Top of the Rock Dance and Cheer programs.
The Kaua‘i High School cheer squad, working under Avery Kano, its new coach for the 2010-2011 year, was on the tails of the Menehune in the Top of the Rock Cheer program, finishing in second place.
The Menehune pepsters also finished second in the Home Jamz program en route to earning the Triple Treat Award, the camp’s top honor at the Triple A, or All Attitude Athletics, cheer camp.
Joining Cardejon in individual honors, Menehune cheer member Cassandra Owens, a senior when school opens next week, was presented a scholarship for $1,000 as a member of Team Elite.
Owens was one of four from Waimea High School and one from Kaua‘i High School who made the Team Elite. Marissa Hesapene, Caitlin Gaspar, Rozee Palma are the three other Menehune on Team Elite.
Jon-Trey Butac was the Kaua‘i Red Raider who was placed on Team Elite.
The 2010 edition of the Waimea cheer squad includes seniors Bronte Acosta, Owens, Palma, Tasha Okamoto, juniors Omi Gaspar, Kawehi Ephan, sophomores Nicolei Banasihan, Hesapene, Nikki Vea, freshmen Tiffany Patricio-Huddy, Jacey Sabala-Rapanot, Taylor Gaspar and Kawena Warren.
These girls will be in action in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation arenas and will compete against cheer squads from Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a during the KIF Cheer Championships, Oct. 7 at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
All Attitude Athletics (Triple A) is the product of two local girls, Kellie Mikami O’Donnell and Vanessa Napoleon, who were brought up and inspired by Hawai‘i-style cheerleading, states the allattitudeathletics Website.
Hawai‘i-style cheer is about spirit, heart and pride — in short, Cheer with Aloha.
The girls say this is a brand of cheer taught from generations before and that they are honored to perpetuate this spirit by encouraging cheer members everywhere to “Spread the Aloha and Cheer with Aloha.”
