WAIMEA — This tournament is just for the love of baseball, said David Bukoski.
Bukoski is the tournament director of the Waimea Goodwill Baseball Tournament that opened with three games — two Broncos and a Mustang — Friday morning at the Waimea Canyon Park.
Teams from Mililani, Kona, Kalihi and the Police Activities League converged at the park, free from the welcomed showers that blanketed the Eastside of the island.
“This is for those boys who didn’t make the states,” Bukoski said. “We wanted to extend the season for them and give them a chance to play with other teams who also didn’t get a chance at states. It’s just for the love of the game.”
Bukoski said each of the teams participating will play four games over two days, the tournament ending Saturday with the completion of the final round of games starting at 2 p.m.
Earlier in the day, the host Kekaha Mustangs will take on Mililani starting at 9 a.m. The Kekaha Mustangs close with a 2 p.m. matchup against PAL 2.
The Waimea Mustangs will play a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. against Mililani, followed by a game against PAL 1 starting at 2 p.m.
In the Bronco division, Kekaha, dropping its opener, 8-2 against Kona, Friday, opens against Mililani starting at 9 a.m. and closes against PAL 2 starting at 2 p.m.
Kalawai plays a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. against Mililani and closing with a 2 p.m. game with PAL 1.
Kona opens with a 9 a.m. matchup against PAL 2, followed by an 11:30 a.m. game against PAL 1.
Bukoski, a fire inspector with the Kaua‘i Fire Department, was enjoying the games during one of the county’s Furlough Days.
“I don’t have anything better to do,” Bukoski said. “Besides, this is perfect weather for playing baseball.”
