LIHU‘E — Jenna Rodriguez’s two-out, two-run, walk-off home run that gave the University of Hawai‘i softball team a 5-4 victory over top-seeded Alabama in May’s Tuscaloosa Super Regional has been nominated for “Best Upset” in the 2010 ESPY Awards.
The exciting win sent the Rainbow Wahine to their first Women’s College World Series appearance.
Rodriguez drove in all five of UH’s runs in the winner-take-all game three, hitting a three-run bomb in the first inning and then the two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The day before, UH bounced back after an 8-0 loss in five innings, to snap Alabama’s nation-leading 28-game win streak with an 8-7 win that forced the third game of the series.
The UH victory marked the first time since the inception of the Super Regionals in 2003 to the NCAA Tournament, that the No. 1 seed did not advance to the WCWS.
