LIHU‘E — People have until 11:59 p.m., Thursday, to register for the second annual Mayor-a-thon, said county spokeswoman Mary Daubert.
She was part of the mayor’s weekly Walking Work Bus, an initiative sponsored by the county and Get Fit Kaua‘i: the Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition on Kaua‘i, who also spearhead the Mayor-a-thon.
“Right now, we have about 700 people registered for the Mayor-a-thon,” said Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. who led the group that started out at the Mo‘ikeha Building courtyard and traveled along Rice Street to Ho‘olako Street. “We would like to see a lot more people sign up for this Saturday event. It’s free and it’s fun.”
Daubert said pre-registration is online only at www.getfitkauai.com for the 2-, 4-, 6- or 8-mile walk, jog, run, or bike event along the four-mile stretch of Ke Ala Hele Makala‘e, Phase II.
Pre-registered participants can check in starting at 6 a.m. Saturday with the event starting at 7 a.m.
“It should be a lot of fun,” Daubert said. “There are a lot of prizes, and the prizes for the best decorated walker and bicycle are resort stays.”
“Walking offers so many health benefits,” Carvalho said in a release announcing the start of the Mayor’s Walking Work Bus, June 8 and continuing each week through the end of August.
Carvalho also attended the Kids Summer Fest, hosted by the Wilcox Health Bone and Joint Center and the Pediatric Department at Kaua‘i Medical Clinic, Saturday, where more than 600 young children, youth and their parents were treated to a fun, free community health event. (See related story.)
“I encourage everyone to join me for this weekly Mayor’s Walking Work Bus activity,” Carvalho said. “This is also a perfect opportunity to prepare for the Mayor-a-thon, Saturday, and the Kaua‘i Marathon on Sept. 5.”
Brian Curll, a member of the Get Fit Kaua‘i Mayor’s Steering Committee, said the weekly event also can help people prepare for the second and third triathlons in this year’s TriKaua‘i Triathlon series, the second triathlon coming up July 18 and the final one being Nov. 21.
Daubert said the Mayor’s Walking Work Bus is scheduled every Tuesday through the end of August starting at 11:45 a.m. at the Mo‘ikeha Building courtyard. Pickup points include the Bank of Hawai‘i, the Lihu‘e Post Office, First Hawaiian Bank, Kaua‘i Toyota, Rice Shopping Center, and Ace Hardware.
Anyone participating in the Mayor’s Walking Work Bus should wear good walking shoes, use sunscreen, bring water, and obey all traffic signals along the route. Headwear is optional.
