Team Central will host the Up Country Kings, a team from Maui, when the 2010 Merv Lopes Kaua‘i Hoops Classic opens, Thursday at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
That will be one of two games played on the opening night of the Boys Junior Varsity division basketball tournament that will end Sunday with the championship game starting at 3 p.m.
Thursday night’s action starts at 6 p.m. followed by Hanakila taking on the Aiea Blazers, one of four O‘ahu teams flying over for the tournament. That game tips off starting at 7 p.m.
Pool play continues through Saturday with four games on tap for Friday starting at 5 p.m. Saturday games start at 9 a.m. and will play throughout the day, the sixth and final game starting at 2 p.m.
In addition to the Aiea Blazers, O‘ahu teams in the lineup include the Ali‘i Basketball, opening against Hanakila, Friday at 6 p.m., the Honolulu Sharks, opening against Team Central, Friday night starting at 8 p.m., and the Scorpions, opening against the Maui team starting at 7 p.m., Friday.
Kaua‘i teams participating include Team Central, Hanakila, Papalina, opening against Aiea, Friday at 5 p.m.
There is no admission charge to view the competition that plays four six-minute stop time quarters.
