A golf tournament June 19 is one of the sources for scholarship funds for the Kaua‘i High School Foundation which recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to two graduates of the Kaua‘i High School Class of 2010.
Shaun Koide and Tyler Navarro, both outstanding in the Kaua‘i High School air riflery squad during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season, were named this year’s recipients earlier in April, states a release from the KHS Foundation.
Koide, the son of Miles and Eliza Koide, will be heading to California Polytechnic State University pursuing a degree in electrical engineering.
Navarro, the son of Damien and Charlene Navarro, will also pursue a degree in electrical engineering, but at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
Since its inception in November, 2008, the KHS Foundation has been dedicated to serve the students of Kaua‘i High School, Kaua‘i’s first public high school, by promoting scholarship, providing financial support for educational programs and capital improvement projects as well as sponsoring other activities to advance Kaua‘i High School.
Gary Yamamoto, the president of KHS Foundation, said in a letter on the foundation’s Web site, “Moral, physical, and financial support to improve the educational environment at Kaua‘i High School will assure continued outstanding achievements by students of Kaua‘i’s first high school.”
The golf tournament, headed by a 23-member committee led by Honorary Chair David Ishii, Kaua‘i High School Class of 1973, will open with check-in starting at 6 a.m. at the Wailua Golf Course.
A 7:30 a.m. shotgun start will release the field playing in a Three Person Team in a 1-2 Best Ball format (one Best Ball on par 3 and 5 holes and two Best Balls on par 4 holes).
A post-play awards banquet will follow at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention hall where a special prize will be awarded for an All Alumni Team.
The KHS Foundation is supported by donor programs and gifts from alumni, friends, and corporate benefactors.
Contributions to the foundation can always be made by visiting its Web site at www.kauaihighschoolfoundation.com and clicking on to the “Donations” listing for forms and information.
“This is a privilege to be giving back to our high school, and certainly in the name of our teachers, wherever they may be,” Yamamoto said.
