Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre is celebrating its 10th Summer Stars anniversary. Under the direction of HCT veteran Jennifer Downs, each program offers stimulating work and multiple performance opportunities, a press release states. With a returning staff of theater professionals, plus workshop leaders who are top artists and educators in their fields, this summer promises to be one of the best yet.
Regular program registration is open to any age-appropriate young person on Kaua‘i regardless of experience, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Scholarship money is available.
Auditions are this weekend at the Kaua‘i Alliance for the Performing Arts Warehouse Theatre in Puhi.

Planet Kaua‘i takes students on a mission to Kilauea lighthouse where nature artist Patrick Ching will be a guest instructor teaching students how to draw anatomically-correct plants and animals. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the Kaua‘i Economic Development Board, Kids’ College will be held from 8 a.m. to noon June 14 to June 18. Home lunches need to be provided on the last two days, states a press release. Tuition is $125 for the week. Island School
Bank of Hawai‘i Charitable Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Island School in support of its tuition-aid program. Grant funds will be used to reduce tuition costs for families with demonstrated financial need for the 2010-2011 school year. The tuition-aid program is an integral part of admissions and enrollment at Island School, with 42 percent of students receiving tuition aid in 2009-2010, states a press release. Lihu‘e resident Sanoe Keli‘inoi, a freshman in environmental science, made the Dean’s List at University of Portland, an Oregon Catholic university. U.S. News & World Report ranks the institution as one of the top 10 regional universities in the American West. It is the only school in Oregon to offer a college of arts and sciences, a graduate school, and nationally-accredited programs in the schools of business, education, engineering and nursing.
Mime Theater and Yoga Camp
Begins June 22
Princeville Yoga
Princeville Yoga Art of Mime Theater and Yoga Performance Camp for children ages 7 to 18 runs June 22 to July 29, Tuesdays and Thursdays, culminating with a July 10 performance at Hanalei Art night. Mime and yoga workout and performance workshops will develop skills in expressive movement and theatrical presentation. Janet Carafa, professional mime artist and yoga instructor, has trained under Marcel Marceau, and performs as a company member of the American Mime Theater. Elements explored include: Body language and physics of motion; yoga, breathe and alignment; emotion aerobics; characterization and interplay; creating illusions in space. Cost is $96 for the 12 classes. Drop-in and six-class sessions available upon request. Scholarships available.
