LIHU‘E — Two-term Kaua‘i County Councilman Tim Bynum has announced his intention to run for re-election to the County Council, a news release says.
Accompanied by key supporters, he pulled nomination papers Thursday when the Elections office opened.
“I am pleased to continue my support for Tim this election season,” stated campaign chair and long-time supporter Puna Kalama Dawson. “Tim has effectively championed efforts to bring more transparency, access and openness to local decision making. He devotes his full time to Council business and is consistently engaged, sensible, and even-handed in his dealings with the people of Kaua‘i.”
Before being elected to the Council, Tim’s work with former Mayor Bryan Baptiste included facilitating community meetings and projects throughout Kaua‘i. Tim has long been active in the community. He is the founder of The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park and coordinated the Kamalani Playground and Kamalani Kai Bridge community built projects. Tim wrote the initial funding proposal that started the shared-use coastal path project and continues to support its expansion.
“Tim clearly understands the implications of our current land use policies. If re-elected he will continue to work towards implementing smart growth principles. His vision for managed growth will protect our island’s unique open spaces and enhance our town cores,” said campaign Treasurer Thomas Noyes. “Tim is our best choice to assure a responsible and effective council!”
Prior to his work in County government Bynum had a 26-year career as a licensed marriage and family therapist and social worker, including time as the Executive Director of Leadership Kaua‘i and Director of the Children’s Justice Center on Kaua’i. He served as Program Director for counseling programs at the YWCA of Kaua’i and Child and Family Service. For 13 years he ran a small business, Hawaii Conference Associates, conducting accredited educational programs on Kaua‘i for professionals, and has served as a Director of the Kapa’a Business Association.
“I am humbled and honored to have been chosen to serve on the Council and if re-elected will continue to listen carefully to community input and work collaboratively with community members and my colleagues on the County Council,” stated Bynum. Tim lives in Kapa’a with his wife of 33 years, Gini, who is a nurse at the KVMH clinic in ‘Ele‘ele. Tim’s children are David (22) and Kelly (20) who is a University of Hawaii student. His grandson, Kawika, will soon start playing soccer.
