LIHU‘E — Kelli Oride repeated her opening-round performance to take second place at the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state golf championships, Wednesday, firing a 74 for a two-day total of 148.
Oride, a member of the Kaua‘i High School golf team, finished just one stroke off the lead after completing both rounds at the David S. Ishii Foundation tournament at the Turtle Bay Resort on O‘ahu.
She made a charge on the back nine, coming in with a 35 after going out in 39. That 35 was the best nine-hole stretch of her two-day event.
Baldwin High School’s Cassy Isagawa took first place, also shooting a 74, Wednesday, after an opening-round 73 gave her a one-stroke lead, which remained her margin of victory over Oride.
‘Iolani’s Marissa Chow had the round of the day, firing a 71 to move into a tie for third place, after shooting 79, Tuesday. Punahou’s Alina Ching tied her for third at 150.
Kaua‘i’s Taylor Viquelia also duplicated her Tuesday score with another 79, Wednesday. The 158 total was good for a 15th-place finish in the 66-player field.
Daezsa Tomas, also of Kaua‘i High, improved five strokes from her first round, scoring an 85 to finish tied for 38th with a 175 total.
As a team, Kaua‘i finished in fourth place, combining for a 481 over the two days.
Punahou finished in first (455), followed by Baldwin (463) and Waiakea (477) in the top three. Moanalua and Mid-Pacific took fifth and sixth, respectively.
On the boys side, Kaua‘i’s Levi Miyashiro was the highest-finishing KIF representative and improved seven strokes from his first round, firing an 80 after an 87 on Tuesday. His 167 total put him into a tie for 44th place in the 95-player field.
Kapa‘a’s Sean Mamaclay was just behind with a 168, following up his 84 from Tuesday with another identical score.
The Raiders’ Pono Tokioka improved five strokes from his first round, shooting an 82 for a 169 total.
Reyn Morioka (93-87) and Walter Castillo (89-91) each finished with 180 totals for Kaua‘i, while Braeden Robley knocked six strokes off his Tuesday round for a 186 total (96-90).
The boys tournament was won by Campbell High School’s Rudy Cabalar, who went to a playoff with Kamehameha-Big Island’s Nainoa Calip after each ended with 141 totals.
Cabalar birdied the first playoff hole, No. 18, for the championship.
He put up the tournament’s best round, Wednesday, shooting 69 to follow up his Tuesday 72.
Calip was the first-round leader with a 71 and improved on that with a 70, Wednesday, but fell just short due to Cabalar’s tremendous afternoon.
